Rabbi David Algaze

President

Rabbi David Algaze, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina to a Syrian family, has had Orthodox rabbinic ordination since 1973. He is a recognized spiritual leader in the Orthodox Jewish community. Prominent member of the RCA (Rabbinical Council of America) and active rabbi in a congregation affiliated with the OU (Orthodox Union) and the Queens Vaad.

 

A graduate of the University of Buenos Aires, he holds an M.A. in Philosophy from Columbia University and has been a member of the Herbert Lehman Institute of Ethics, a President's Fellow at Columbia University, and a Kent Fellow of the Danfourth Foundation. A Sephardic Rabbi, his ancestors include the Maharit, Rabbi Yomtov Algaze, who was Rishon Letzion, Chief Rabbi of the ancient Jewish community of Eretz Israel, and Rabbi Shelomo Algaze, the Chief Rabbi who excommunicated Shabetai Tzvi, and is also a nephew by Rabbi Shaul Setton, author of the famous decree prohibiting conversions to Judaism within the Syrian-Jewish community in Argentina and then spread throughout the world.
