Frequently asked questions
We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in New York, USA, chaired by Rabbi David Algaze. We work in partnership with Rabbi Zalman Weiss (Director of the Halakhic Conversion Institute) in Israel and Rabbi Moshe Ruegsegger (Director of Yeshiva Toldot Yehuda) in Puebla, Mexico, under the supervision of recognized Orthodox Batei Dinim in Israel and the United States, respectively.
Our fundamental vision is to build self-sufficient Jewish communities in Latin America that possess a solid halakhic foundation and are able to sustain a vibrant educational, economic, and ritual life, while always remaining connected to the global network of the Jewish people.
This mission operates under the sacred principle of "Pidyon Shevuyim" (the ransoming of captives). It is essential to clarify that we do not proselytize or actively seek anyone outside our community; our work is not to free physical prisoners, but to open our doors and provide refuge, education, and guidance to the "Bene Anusim"—descendants of Jews forced to convert in the past—who, of their own free will and with sincerity of heart, knock on our door seeking to reclaim their identity, their education, and their rightful place within the people of Israel.
The historical context makes this work urgent. After centuries of repression, we are witnessing an unprecedented phenomenon: a massive curiosity for the ethical and moral richness of Judaism. In Latin America, thousands of people are awakening to their heritage. Unfortunately, this path has been fraught with obstacles. Initially, many were led astray by messianic groups that falsified Judaism; however, as they deepened their study, these sincere souls recognized the need to connect with the authentic Torah, adopting practices such as Kashrut and Shabbat.
Despite their genuine efforts, many encountered closed doors at traditional synagogues or fell victim to leaders lacking formal training and exorbitantly expensive, invalid conversions, leaving them disillusioned and disconnected. In response to this disorganized and sometimes chaotic landscape, Portal to Judaism was founded in 2016. Our goal is not only to offer information but to provide the structure, legitimate halakhic guidance, and sense of belonging that these returning communities deserve, transforming the chaos into a clear path back home.
This strategic alliance responds to the critical need to offer a legitimate alternative to the existing disorder in conversion processes in the region. After an exhaustive analysis, we identified that the model led by Rabbi Zalman Weiss and Rabbi Moshe Ruegsegger, based at Yeshiva Toldot Yehuda in Puebla, represents the most rigorous, structured, and honest approach currently available for guiur (conversion) processes.
Unlike other programs, its educational system is comprehensive, transparent, and overseen and recognized by respected Orthodox communities, providing the halakhic certainty and rigor our candidates require. We are not partnering for convenience alone, but out of a shared vision of excellence and integrity.
The alliance establishes the adoption of non-negotiable halakhic parameters, based on the extensive experience of Rabbis Weiss and Ruegsegger, to guarantee the validity of the process. These strict parameters include:
Constant community supervision: The candidate cannot be an "isolated Jew"; he must live and breathe community.
Educational exclusivity: The explicit and total rejection of Catholic or secular schools for the children of converts, guaranteeing Jewish continuity.
Comprehensive post-guiur support: Ensuring that conversion is not the end, but the beginning of a real and sustainable integration into the Jewish people.
